GAZA: A senior Israeli official has said the cabinet will meet on Tuesday to approve a ceasefire deal with Hezbollah, and a Lebanese official said Beirut had been told by Washington that an accord could be announced “within hours”.
US news website Axios, citing an unnamed senior US official, said Israel and Lebanon had agreed to the terms of a deal, and a senior Israeli official told Reuters that Tuesday’s meeting was intended to approve it.
Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, said Israel would maintain the ability to strike southern Lebanon under any agreement.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) chief on Monday said that attacks on the Kamal Adwan Hospital in Gaza “must stop immediately”, as Israel’s war on the Palestinian enclave stretches into its second year, Anadolu Agency reports.
“Continued attacks on Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern #Gaza have caused an additional 14 injuries in the past 48 hours, including the hospital director and the very few remaining doctors and nurses — this is deplorable/intolerable/deeply concerning,” Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said. Tedros noted that there are still 65 adult patients with injuries, 13 child patients, and eight patients in the intensive care unit.
Heavy rains have flooded tent encampments of displaced Palestinians across the Gaza Strip, adding misery to communities already devastated by 13 months of war, as Israeli forces stepped up attacks in the enclave.
Downpours overnight inundated tents and in some places washed away the plastic and cloth shelters used by displaced people in the enclave, most of whom have been uprooted several times during the war between Israel and Hamas.
Calling for a ceasefire, he said: “The attacks on Kamal Adwan Hospital must stop immediately, and safe passage for a humanitarian mission must be ensured, so that health personnel can be deployed and medical supplies provided for the remaining patients.”
The Israeli war on the Gaza Strip has killed more than 44,200 people, mostly women and children, since 7 October, 2023. More than 44,235 Palestinians have been killed and 104,638 injured in Israel’s military offensive on Gaza since October 7, 2023, the Gaza health ministry said in a statement, Reuters reports.
The toll includes 24 deaths in the previous 24 hours, the statement added. On Thursday, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, and his former Defence Minister, Yoav Gallant, for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice over its brutal war on Gaza.
